The Free Range offers up a unique one-strap, cross-foot closure system to keep dead spots to a minimum so that you are fully in control. The thick padded tongue adds an extra level of comfort.
As our most aggressive shoe, the Free Range has more rubber coverage and heel tension than any other model in the So iLL line, offering an unprecedented amount of technical precision.
The Free Range is coated in Dark Matter rubber, a sticky outsole rubber originally formulated for the United States Navy Seals to ensure security in foot placement during approaches.
This shoe fits like I expected. The rubber feels like I’m super glued to the holds. I absolutely love this shoe and will buy it again. I made the transition from scarpa VSR and 5.10 dragons. By far my favorite of the 3!
Good shoe second pair
I purchased these direct from so ill because I didn't see a mens 9 on Amazon. I wear an 8.5 street shoe, and per so ill' s recommendation I went a half size up. The fit is very snug, especially is the toe box (I have some what wide feet) giving me great edging and toe hook ability. These shoes are much stiffer than evolve shaman to the point that i can literally stand on my toes on one foot which makes it super easy the dig in on a microchip of a hold. So ill has great customer service, they actually called me the day I received the shoes to ask me how I liked them... I'm not a sponsored climber (not even close) but I highly recommend giving them a try.
Not only are they a striking bright green, but they molded perfectly to my feet in just two weekend climbing trips. It had been years since I wore anything other than La Sportiva or 5.10. Shoes from more recent makers had always caused hot-spots for me until I tried the Free Range. The 'sock-like' comfort copious top-of-foot articulated rubber, suction-cup like heel and well though-out design (two different ways to cinch them down) have made these my new on-sighting shoes! Well done So iLL, keep up the good work.
I've been climbing for a while now, around 15 years off and on. I've climbed in shoes from 6 different brands and countless models. I think that personal fit is the greatest factor for performance climbing shoes. That said So iLL makes fit so pretty dang easy, the shoes came with a prepaid return label which I appreciated. The Free Range's quickly became my go to shoe after a trial run, they were the perfect blend of stiffness and sensitivity for the majority of climbing that I do (face and overhanging sport). I'm on my 2nd pair now and I'm stoked that I've found a pair of shoes that fit me and my climbing style so perfectly.
This shoe fits my foot perfect. I'm super stoked about dark matter rubber. As a former life long 5.10 guy, I'm super particular about stickiness. This rubber is where it's at.
I purchased the free range climbing shoe to try and get myself to peak performance when it comes to climbing. They have traveled far and wide with me to no disappointment. Excited to become a frequent customer of So Ill as I begin construction on a home climbing gym.
