I think this has got to be the perfect size for a firestarter! Not overly large and heavy, and not too small to be difficult to get good sparks from. This one really rains down the sparks and makes it easy to start a fire. Also unlike other firestarters I've used in the past which have hopelessly short lanyards which make it virtually impossible to strike the ferro rod properly, this one is the perfect length.

For best results make sure sure to scrap off the black coating on about a 3mm wide strip before striking.

For anyone unfamiliar with the technique there are several youtube videos to explain in great detail.
One word to anyone that has never used one of these, there is a black protective coating on the rod that needs to be scratched off before any sparks will fly (I assume it's a type of protective inhibitor coating). Use the flat side of the striker with all of the small sharp points for 2 or 3 passes and you'll be good to go.
P.S. Cotton balls work great for kindling.

I try to get my teenage kid as much as possible outdoors and knowing that you can have a nice fire and no need to worry about matches being dry, or need to have a lighter all the time that might explode in the dead heat of summer in a car is nice.
We tested the flints last week, and it starts a fire from the 2nd or 3rd strike, which is great for this method, since other cheaper models would require to grate some of the magnesium before striking.

Bright, hot sparks come off and can start tinder on fire. You have to use a LOT of pressure to make it work, but it does perform as it should. After 100's of uses, it would need to be replaced, as the magnesium wears down, but that will be years from now....

I recently acquired this fire starter kit for my camping bag .I was looking for a light weight, durable and dependable kit,
I have had time to put it to the test and it works great!
Remember to do some research if you are new to this type of fire starting, remove the outer layer ( black ) until you reach the silver metallic interior. That is the fire steel you need for throwing large , high heat sparks .
The striker is very solid and has a great handle ,
Use the seraded side with the teeth to scrape away the outer layer, then the flat side with a lip to strike the fire steel.

All in all , a perfect addition to your camping or emergency packs .

I haven’t had a chance to use them yet, hoping too for when I go into the woods.

I’m giving a 4 star review because I haven’t tested them yet cause Covid-19 has caused camping sites and national parks to close.

They didn’t arrive damaged, so I assume they are quite durable. Very excited to use them and can’t wait to go camping or even if I get lost hiking, at least I would have something to start a fire for warmth and light.

This is quite possibly the most useless product I have ever ordered from this site. Perhaps it is somewhat my fault, but I am unable after many vigorous scrapings with very fine wood shavings as fuel I was unable to start a flame. Can any one help? Highly unrecommended.

Striker part is hard to use because it's so small. Maybe the spine of a knife will work better on the ferro rod?

The problem using it was the user not the product. Good value for the money, definitely would buy again

I purchased them for our camping needs, to many times I don't have a lighter as I don't smoke, or if I do have a lighter it does not work as it was in my rucksack for years. This item sits in your camping gear and ready for use. Works well very easy to start a fire.

Arrived on time and as advertised. Ferro rods work well and are of a fully usable size. Appear to be durable and well constructed based on use so far. Throw fully usable sparks. Would order these from this user again if needed.

Hopefully these will work as advertised. I have not used them as we are in the midst of the worst snowstorm in years, however I will use them later when we go camping & will update then.

tryed one this weekend or rather showed my 9 year old grand son how to use it and it worked very well,every body was impressed at how well it worked,thank you it will be handy,in fact I just bought two more,Denis,have a good day.

 I was amazed to see how well this fire starter actually worked! It doesn’t take a lot of effort to use, definitely worth the price (it comes with 2 fire starters) and is durable, however I wish it could piece together or come with a very small pouch to keep it separate. Other than that, I highly recommend the buy!
